Superfood or Super Myth?

 Superfood or Super Myth?

Been wondering about Superfoods? Check out this guest post from Catalyst SPT member and Registered Dietician Nutrionist Adena Neglia
We seem to constantly read about the latest "superfood": a food with health promoting benefits and a stellar nutrition profile. It is suddenly a "must-have" item in your grocery cart. How did you ever live without it?! Call us crazy for asking, but are these so-called superfoods really what they're cracked up to be?

We should first point out that the term "superfood" has no actual scientific definition. In addition, many of the claims for superfoods have not been proven. If you really look closely at some of the studies, they often use highly concentrated extracts of the food instead of the food itself, or the study is way too small to make any type of conclusions.

The best thing to do for your health is to eat a variety of different fruits and vegetables- there is no one magical fruit or vegetable that is superior to the others. If anything, try to buy local, seasonal produce. Eating well does not have to be exotic, and it does not need to break the bank.
